Keeping Your Dog Safe at the Beach: Tips from a Westfield Emergency Veterinarian

Keeping-Your-Dog-Safe-at-the-Beach-Tips-from-a-Westfield-Emergency-Veterinarian

Few things are better than soaking up the sun and splashing in the water with your canine companion. However, whether you’re traveling out of the state for the ultimate beach vacation or hanging out at a local swimming spot, taking steps to ensure your dog’s safety is crucial. While it seems like a safe destination, the beach has a few hazards you should be aware of.

At Small Animal Emergency Hospital of Westfield, we don’t want an emergency putting a damper on a fun day in the sun. Keep reading to discover some tips for keeping your dog safe at the beach from a Westfield emergency veterinarian.

Be Mindful of the Sun

Hot, sunny days are perfect for beach outings. Those days are also when your pup is at the greatest risk of heatstroke, heat exhaustion, and even sunburn. If the temperature is extremely high or your dog is overweight or has a flat nose, consider rescheduling your outing for a cooler day.

Watch for Sharp Objects

You never know what you might find on the beach. One thing we know for certain, though, is that you don’t want to discover any sharp objects with your dog’s feet or your own. Watch out for things like sticks, shells, stones, and glass.

Bring Plenty of Fresh Water

Make sure you pack enough water to keep your dog and yourself well-hydrated. Drinking ocean water is unsafe for obvious reasons, but your dog shouldn’t drink from freshwater sources, like lakes, rivers, and ponds, either. Keep an eye on your canine companion to make sure they’re only drinking the water you provide.

Seek Emergency Care When Warranted

If your dog shows any signs of heatstroke or exhibits any other concerning symptoms during or after your beach trip, take them to an emergency vet right away. As your Westfield emergency veterinarian, we are here to help your pet should they suffer from any summer ailments. Please contact us right away if your four-legged best friend needs help.
